If you've found what seems to be the perfect hand or bow drill fireboard (lightweight, dry, available), but the fingernail test shows that it's too hard, cut a wafer and try the softer end grain. This was a most satisfying and enjoyable bit if hand drill practice today! I just love making less than ideal materials produce embers and friction fires. I used a mystery piece of wood that seemed too hard for the job. Even the end grain was still too hard as evidenced by the very flat spindle tip, but floating the spindle and determination got the ember, twice.
